Bobby Charlton: Rooney will break my record
Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has said he has no doubt over whether Wayne Rooney will break his United scoring record, revealing the striker is happy at Old Trafford.
Rooney reached 200 goals for United on Tuesday night with two goals in the team’s 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
That pushed Rooney’s record to three goals from three starts this season, putting behind him the transfer saga of
the summer that saw him push a move to Chelsea.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Charlton said the saga is in the past and Rooney is now happy at the club, thanks to David Moyes and Sir Alex Ferguson.
“I don't think there was that much that went on. I was never pulled into a situation where I had to decide what do we do about Wayne Rooney. I don't know whether someone said the wrong thing or caught him on a bad day.
“It will not be the first time a footballer comes into the manager with all sorts of problems. But it was a bit of a blip and hopefully, that's behind us now.
“He's happy and David Moyes has to be thanked for that, Sir Alex Ferguson also.”
Now fourth on the list of United's all-time top goalscorers, Rooney needs another 50 goals to surpass Charlton, a feat the record holder himself thinks will be broken.
"I think Wayne can definitely break my record,” Charlton added.
“In fact I have no doubt he will score those goals.
“And I think he will be looking forward to doing it. If he keeps fit and he continues at his scoring rate he will have scored so many that thinking about being my record will be a thing of the past.”
Rooney has been urged by Moyes to continue his impressive form this Sunday as United travel across the city to take on City.
